Bias

Common meaning:

When an individual is holding an unsupported prejudice toward something.

Hidden meaning of the Equity religion:

Occurs every time a person from an oppressive group is communicating and it never occurs when a person from an oppressed group is talking.

Discussion:

The Equity belief system says that everyone from a dominant group has prejudice and no one from a minoritized group does.

Reasonable people would consider bias to be a good tool to use when we don’t know many details about something. It helps us navigate situations when we have little knowledge about people or a culture. The problem arises when information is obtained that gives us greater clarity about the situation and we refuse to update our low resolution bias with the new information. At that point we would be prejudiced, since we refuse to alter our bias with known facts.

Equity believes that bias is always bad and that it can only be held by members of oppressive groups. This is why they believe it is reasonable to ignore what someone from an oppressor group says, because it is tainted with Western thinking.

In reality, all humans have biases that can slip into prejudice if we are not careful. Pretending otherwise opens the door to charlatans who attempt to deceive us all.
