Presumed Innocence

Common meaning:

Presumption of a person’s innocence requiring the prosecuting party to provide proof of the accused’s guilt.

Hidden meaning of the Equity religion:

Assume a person in an oppressor group is guilty and then look for the evidence. Assume a person in an oppressed group is not guilty and then ignore any evidence that indicates guilt.

Discussion:

Equity makes the assumption that all members of an oppressor group are guilty and all members of an oppressed group are innocent.

The problem with assuming people in oppressor groups are guilty, without evidence, is the natural human tendency to only look for facts that prove the story we are telling ourselves. Human imagination is a wonderful thing, but it can lead us to subconsciously manufacturing evidence to prove what we want to believe.

The problem with assuming people in oppressed groups are innocent occurs when evidence of guilt is found. The narrative that the issues the oppressed are experiencing are not their fault is so strong it causes Equity believers to ignore the truth staring them in the face.

Presumed innocence is not something we want to lose.
